Friday is upon us once again and the excitement is mounting here at Ceol FM with just two days to go to the Fleadh Cheoil. With the recent addition of our Uilleann Pipes Stream wanted to celebrate by featuring an exceptional piper that you will hear on this stream. John McSherry a world renowned piper from Belfast. John grew up in a family steeped in traditional music and it is therefore no surprise that he took up the Uilleann Pipes as a youngster and by the age of 14 he had two All-Ireland titles in the bag. In 1987 he was the youngest ever winner of the Oireachtas piping competition and as a result went on to represent Ireland in the Lorient Inter-Celtic Festival. John has been a founder member of many groups such as Tamalin, a group which he formed with his three siblings and the widely popular group Lúnasa. During the 1990s john was a very busy man not only being in groups like Lúnasa but playing in Donal Lunny’s group Coolfin. Both groups released albums to wide acclaim and toured the world. In more recent times as well as a solo career John has also teamed up with fellow musician; Michael McGoldrick to release an album At First Light which was named best traditional album of the year in Irish American News. At First Light became the name of McSherry’s ongoing band. He has also formed the more recent group Ulaid.
With music featured in film soundtracks and an IMA award for best new album for his solo album Soma it’s no wonder he is recognised as one of the finest exponents in the art of uilleann piping.
Irish Music Magazine quoted McSherry as being “a true master” but don’t take our word for it read more about John by visiting his website
