Today’s feature is an all Ireland champion fiddle and banjo player by the name of Cathal Hayden. He hales from county Tyrone. Cathal comes from a very musical family and has been crowned all Ireland champion with both the fiddle and the banjo. He is the founding member of the group Four Men and a Dog who’s first album Barking mad was hugely successful and it is only fitting that it won the Folks Roots award for best album in 1991. Cathal was also a member of the group Arcady. From travelling the world to his involvement in the Marie Jones play The Blind Fiddler, Cathal has brought Irish traditional music to the hearts of many. The Hayden family are known for their infamous family sessions in the family pub so if you are ever visiting the village of The Rock be sure to call in for a few tunes on a Saturday.
A great review of Cathal Hayden’s music along with some history of his families ties to Irish traditional music was written by The Irish Music Review site.
The tune I have chosen from Cathal is a reel called Farewell to Ireland. You can hear it in the Youtube video found below.
